Medora High School accepting donations of formal wear for homecoming and prom

MEDORA — This year teachers are getting a headstart on creating homecoming and prom memories for Medora High School students.

The high school homecoming is planned to be on February 11th and Prom is scheduled for April 16th.

Donations of formal wear for both young women and men are needed including shoes and jewelry.

The goal is to allow every student to attend the prom without a financial burden that may prevent them from attending.

So far, the school has received 16 dresses and eight pairs of shoes.

School officials are also hoping people will offer donations of their time to help students with their hair and makeup at no charge.

The prom committee also is accepting donations to cover the cost of tickets for students for prom which is $8 and after prom, which is $20.

Anyone interested in donating clothing, shoes, and jewelry may send a message to Leah Young via Facebook or drop the donations off at the school, and those wanting to cover the cost of tickets may call the school at 812-966-2201 or drop off their donation at the school.

It’s a win-win for the students and their parents.

“I try to tell the kids things like (prom) are what you’re going to remember when you grow up,” Young said. “Those are the memories that you are going to have from high school is the big events like that, like the prom and homecoming and graduation and all of your extracurricular activities, so I always encourage them to literally do everything.”

Young said she will accept donations year-round because there could be other instances, like a job interview or a formal event, where students need formal wear or dress clothes.

“I would literally take them any time because we’ll have homecoming and prom every year,” she said. “Especially just starting out, the more I have and the more sizes and things like that I have to offer, I’ll take anything to get some stuff built up for them.”
