According to a probable cause affidavit, on September 13, 2021, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a call from a woman requesting to speak to an officer in the 12289 block of Tunnelton Road about a protection order violation.

The woman reported Nelson was being verbally abusive to her and there was an active protective order that was filed in Martin County on July 27, 2020.

When police arrived they found Walter, a woman, and a child. Police told them they had received a report of a verbal dispute. Both said, “nothing was going on”.

Nelson had a fresh bandage wrapped around one of his legs. Nelson advised officers that he was bitten by a dog and he might have been yelled because of that.

Officers spoke to Nelson and the woman regarding the protective order, both were under the assumption that the order had been dropped and was no longer valid.

Nelson told the officer the case in Martin County is “still ongoing and is trying to get placed on house arrest.

Nelson was then advised that officers would contact Martin County officials to see if the order was still in place. Both Nelson and the woman understood and the officers left the scene.

On September 14, 2021, Martin County Circuit Court confirmed the order was still active and would not be dismissed until the final hearing.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for Nelson’s arrest.
