East conquers BNL in HHC consolation

BNL’s Nate Pemberton combined with Carter Kimmel for a win at No.2 doubles at Columbus East on Thursday.

COLUMBUS – Columbus East swept the singles while topping Bedford North Lawrence 4-1 during the consolation round of the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament on Thursday.

The Olympians won a key tiebreaker and a third-set super tiebreaker in singles to conquer the Stars for the second time this season. East defeated BNL 5-0 on Aug. 22.

“This one was much more competitive than the first meeting,” BNL coach Chris Kurtz said. “But not enough for the win tonight.”

BNL’s lone victory came at No.2 doubles with Nate Pemberton and Carter Kimmel knocking down Tyler Ernst and Henry Ulrich 6-3, 6-0.

In singles, East’s Erik Takahashi fought off Graham Turner 6-3, 6-3 at No.1, Brady Redelman took a first-set tiebreaker on his way to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over Isaac Bridges at No.2, and Jacob Detmer stopped Orion Hill 6-3, 0-6, 11-9 at No.3.

East’s Ethan Bumbalough and Matthew Degner clipped Jayden Kemp and Drew Stephenson 6-3, 6-2 at No.1 doubles.

BNL (5-13) will host New Albany in the final round of the HHC consolations on Friday.
