Obituary: Nana Jo (Deputy) Jones

October 11, 1956 – June 19, 2022

Nana Jo (Deputy) Jones, an amazing mother, grandmother, wife, and friend died peacefully at her home in Mitchell on 19 June 2022, after a courageous battle against cancer at the age of 65.

Nana was born on 11 October 1956 to James and Kathleen “Katie” (Cooper) Deputy in Bedford, Indiana. She was a free-spirited force of nature who always lit up any room she entered. Nana loved her family and friends fiercely and was a dedicated U.S. Army mom who traveled the world to support her daughter, son-law, and granddaughter. She never met a stranger (much to the chagrin of her daughter), would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need, and loved her four-legged fur kids (and all animals) with a passion. She had an infectious laugh similar to a witch’s cackle and could cuss like a sailor, but she was an incredible human being with a heart of gold that will be sorely missed.

Nana is survived by her husband of 29 years Joseph Jones, and her daughter Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Akers-Vornholt (U.S. Army Retired), her son-in-law Lieutenant Colonel Wayne Vornholt (U.S. Army Retired), her granddaughter Chloe Vornholt, and her incredible Goddaughter, Kattie (Hughes) Bond and her beautiful children Logan, Audi, and Dallis-Lynn and her niece, Lily, who affectionately called her OG (Old Girl).

The family will hold a private celebration to honor a truly remarkable woman. In lieu of flowers please send donations in Nana’s memory to the White River Humane Society of Lawrence County.

Cresthaven Funeral Home is entrusted with her care.
