Obituary: William Dale (Blacky) Blackwell

June 1, 1937 – June 8, 2022

William Dale (Blacky) Blackwell, 85, of Mitchell, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at his residence.

Born June 1, 1937, in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Johnie and Thelma (Trowbridge) Blackwell. He was a retired truck driver and drove for more than 50 years. He started out with Jack Penn in Paoli early on, then on to Calcar Quarry for over 40 years. He retired from Hanna Trucking around 2011. Trucking was his life, he missed it terribly and he made many friends over the years where he earned his nickname, Blacky. He loved his breakfast visits monthly with his best friend, Tim Noble, and his standing date with his daughter, Barbi, every Wednesday
night for over 25 years. He was an avid fan of I.U. and Indiana Pacers basketball.

Survivors include his daughters, Barbi Chastain and Glenda Hall, both of Mitchell; a son, Randy Blackwell, of Orleans; a sister, Barbara Kern; step-daughter, Betty Guetig, of Salem, and Billy Gasaway, of Paoli; several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom he loved very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Donald Blackwell, and his ex-wife, Norma Blackwell, to whom he had remained close and who passed in 2010.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day &
Carter Mortuary with Tom Bostic officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00
pm to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
