On Track: I-69 Finish Line project update

INDIANA – State Road 37 lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 45 mph remain in place around the clock between the Egbert Road overpass and State Road 144 in Morgan County.

Crews are completing finishing touches on the highway, including cable barrier installation in the center median, and hope to reopen S.R. 37 to four lanes by late April.

Finishing touches in Martinsville include paving the final layer of surface asphalt. Expect daytime traffic delays for flagging and nighttime I-69 ramp closures starting late this week at the S.R. 252/Hospital Drive, Ohio Street/Artesian Avenue, and S.R. 44/Reuben Drive interchanges.

A new S.R. 39/Morton Avenue ramp to I-69 southbound is expected to open late this week in Martinsville. The temporary two-way ramp built for last year’s S.R. 37 closure will be removed.

Marion County

Southbound State Road 37 traffic was shifted last week toward the outside shoulder between Epler Avenue and Wicker Road. Edgewood Avenue is currently closed west of S.R. 37 and access to the east is right in and right out only to northbound S.R. 37.

Expect nighttime lane closures in the area for temporary paving and brief traffic stoppages on or after Friday, April 1 for restriping. Northbound S.R. 37 will be shifted across the center median and share the west side of the road with southbound traffic separated by temporary barriers.

SR 37 at Edgewood Avenue

Several local road closures are scheduled to occur with the S.R. 37 traffic shift. Edgewood Avenue east of S.R. 37 is expected to close permanently. Temporary closure of Belmont Avenue between Edgewood and Epler avenues is expected for much of this year. Click for a map of the Edgewood and Belmont Avenue closures and alternate routes in the area.

Another section of Belmont Avenue east of S.R. 37 is also expected to close permanently late this week near Aspen Lakes Apartments to begin utility work. Access to this area will be from Wicker Road to the south or Winslet Boulevard to the north.

Johnson County

The realigned Huggin Hollow Road is expected to open this week at the Circle K and BP gas stations and the existing road will close. Watch for changing traffic patterns for traffic turning onto and from S.R. 144.

SR 144 near Huggin Hollow Road

Huggin Hollow Road will serve as the detour when Old S.R. 37 and Wellington Drive are closed north of S.R. 144, which is expected next week for roundabout construction. Click for a map of upcoming traffic pattern changes in this area.

Expect S.R. 144 traffic to be shifted and restricted next week to narrow 10-foot lanes for I-69 interchange construction between the White River bridge and the Bluff Creek Parkway access road east of S.R. 37. Left turning traffic may impede eastbound S.R. 144 at Huggin Hollow Road and westbound traffic at Old S.R. 37/Waverly Park Road. Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes.

Another access point to Old S.R. 37 from the north is expected to open later this week. Smith Valley Road will be shifted onto a temporary stone roadway west of S.R. 37 and connect with a new roundabout. This will allow for completion of the Bluffdale Drive extension north of Smith Valley Road and connection with Fairview Road. Click here for a map of access points in this area.

The actual starting date and duration for work and any closures may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.
