Obituary: Kathleen Marie (Schumacher) Combs

January 8, 1933 – March 11, 2022

Kathleen Marie (Schumacher) Combs, 89, of Owensburg, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2022, at IU Health University Hospital.

Born January 8, 1933, in Crete, Illinois, she was the daughter of John G. and Eva Marie (Tempest) Schumacher. She married Billy A. Combs on May 1, 1987, and he survives.

 Kathleen was a graduate of Bedford High School class of 1951, retired from the Crane Commissary where she worked as a cashier for many years, a member of the Owensburg Baptist Church, the Owensburg Euchre Club, and the Hillbilly’s Clan #16.

Kathleen was a force, sassy, full of life for 89 years, loved adventure, and lived each day to the fullest. She loved flowers, people, playing cards, making cobblers, pies, and cookies. She was a neat lady and a great neighbor who will be dearly missed.

Surviving to cherish Kathleen’s memory are her husband, Billy Combs; daughters, Ginny Hanson (Paul) Thompson, Beth Hanson (David) Roberts, and Amy Hanson (Phil) Thorne; stepdaughter, Debbie Burlingame; grandchildren, Neil (Shannon Richardson) Hanson, Jimmy Hanson, Rosie (Donald) Rector, Leigh (Shane) Roberts, Cari (Josh) Helms, Ben (Alexandra) Roberts, Emily (Johnny Kauffman) Roberts, Lindsey (Nick) Tyree, Abby (Derek) George, and Caleb (Jacy) Thorne; step-grandchildren, Jada Stump and Levi Runnells; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brother, Col. David J. Schumacher; niece, Debbie (Kevin) Johnson; and nephew, Terry (Lynn) Bivins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Danny Joe Hanson; great-granddaughter, Hunter Roberts; sister, Georganna Stevens; and brother, Johnny Schumacher in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes, with Pastor Jason Filler and Phil Thorne officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stone Belt Shrine Club for the benefit of the Shriners Hospital for Children in memory of Kathleen.
