First Sergeant Don McCay set to retire after more than 27 years with the Indiana State Police

ST. JOSEPH – Indiana State Police First Sergeant Don McCay is set to retire after more than 27 years of service with the Indiana State Police.  His influence and expertise will still benefit law enforcement in his new role as Performance Management Process and Training Coordinator with the Indiana High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) in northwest Indiana.

McCay is a graduate of New Prairie High School and Purdue University.  McCay earned his BS, MS, and Ph.D. from Purdue University.  McCay began his ISP career at the Bremen Post after graduating from the Indiana State Police 51st Recruit Academy in December of 1994.

McCay was first promoted in 1995 when he joined the Problem-Oriented Policing Unit and again when he became a detective in 1996.  In 2003 he was promoted to Detective Sergeant where he supervised detectives at the Bremen Post.  McCay went on to become a sergeant in the Meth Suppression Section in 2006.  He came back to the Bremen Post in 2007 where he served as First Sergeant as the Bremen District Investigative Commander.  McCay also spent time assigned to the Training Division before being assigned as North Operations Commander in the Drug Enforcement Section in 2016 with the rank of First Sergeant.

During his tenure with the Indiana State Police, McCay has had specialized in areas of Use of Force Analyst, Hostage Crisis Negotiator, Law Enforcement Training Board Master Instructor, Level A Hazmat Operator, and served on the Clandestine Lab Team.

McCay resides in St. Joseph County with his wife.
