Unionville Elementary 2nd grades raise funds for wells in Africa

BLOOMINGTON – Unionville Elementary 2nd graders and their teacher Mrs.  Kelly Misheikis encouraged the Unionville PTO to start a fundraising campaign to raise money to build a well in Burkina Faso.

They raised more than $10,000, enough to have the water well constructed in Africa and marked with their school’s name.

The money will be donated to the Georgiebadielfoundation. This generous gift is all a result of a Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit focused on the scarcity of water around the world.

Students were inspired to learn more and to take action after reading the book “The Water Princess” by Susan Verde and Georgie Badiel. They did a simulation where they experienced carrying water from the school pond back to the building, learned about water conservation, and made posters for and did presentations to other Arrows at school to inform them about how to waste less water in their daily lives.

The students created a presentation to inspire the PTO to raise money for the cause and Zoomed with Georgie Badiel to learn more about the problem.

Congratulations and great work to the Unionville 2nd Graders!
