Firefighters battle garage fire on West Pleasant Run Road

HELTONVILLE – At 4:57 p.m. Tuesday, Pleasant Run and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Departments along with an IU Lifeline ambulance were dispatched to a garage fire in the 400 block of West Pleasant Run Road.

When firefighters arrived they found the garage engulfed in flames and additional manpower and resources were requested from Marshall Township and Oolitic Volunteer Fire Departments. Nine fire apparatuses were used and 15 firefighters battled the blaze.

“Below freezing weather conditions presented hazardous conditions for firefighters on the scene as water from the fire trucks and fire hoses were freezing and creating icy conditions,” said Pleasant Run VFD Chief Chad Hillenburg. “Because of the large amount of ice on the road in the area of the fire Lawrence County Highway Department responded with a plow truck to spread salt on the roadway to address the icy conditions created during the fire operations.”

Firefighters were on the scene for approximately three hours working to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No one was injured while battling the blaze.
