BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence posted a 4-1 record during the season-opening Super Six tournament on Saturday.

The Stars fell to Madison 63-16 in the first match, then recorded wins over Silver Creek (60-12), Forest Park (39-27), New Albany (54-16) and North Harrison (42-36). BNL’s Junior Arellano went undefeated during his five matches at 285 pounds.

“I am very happy with our day,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “We had a better finish on the day than we did last year, and I see a lot of promise in this group.”

The Stars won only one match on the mat against the Cubs, but that was noteworthy as Alessia Agostini overwhelmed Jamica Perry 15-3 at 126 pounds.

“Alessia represents this wonderful group of girls I’ve gotten to coach this season,” Branam said. “I’ve never had this many girls on a wrestling team, girls who have tried out in the past have quit before the season starts.”

Against the Dragons, BNL recorded wins by Brax Huber (pinning Preston Smith in 54 seconds at 132), Gunner Connaughton (trapping Jacob Losey in 2:58 at 195, and Arellano (smashing Eli Newman in 30 seconds).

Jorj Filler dropped Forest Park’s Elijah Brosmer in 3:43 at 120. Other BNL winners in the clash with the Rangers included Ethan Stancombe (9-5 over Kristopher Fuhrman at 145), Connaughton (pinning Austin Hoppenjans in 1:40 at 195) and Arellano (downing Rolan Zehr in 32 seconds).

BNL’s Jorj Filler had four wins during his matches at 120 pounds.

The Stars kept rolling against the Bulldogs with wins from Patrell Childs (pinning Elena Edmiston in 1:37 at 1:13), Huber (topping Seth Weisenburger in 2:50), Gabe Nelson (stopping Brittany Jackson in 1:56 at 138), Stancombe (downing Matt Batowski in 5:17), Connaughton (leveling Evan Krueger in 1:23), Javi Paredes (thumping Alex Lira in 38 seconds at 220) and Arellano (downing Demetrius Hall in 1:09).

In the final match with the Cougars, BNL winners included Filler (1:11 over Amara Black), Huber (18 seconds over Lucas Atkins), Nelson (42 seconds over Gunner Pate), Connaughton (1:27 over Jackson Emerson) and Arellano (43 seconds over Landon King).

“Junior is representative of the strong underclassmen group that make up this squad,” Branam said.

BNL will visit Scottsburg on Nov. 30.
