On October 17th at approximately 2:15 a.m., officers responded to the Marathon gas station in the 600 block of East 10th Street in reference to a weapons complaint. Upon arrival at the gas station, the 40-year-old store clerk reported to officers that he had been battered and that a man had shot at him as the man was running away from the store. Individuals involved in the incident had fled the area in a sport utility vehicle prior to the arrival of officers.

A deputy from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office located the suspect vehicle occupied by five individuals a short time later near the Speedway gas station in the 3000 block of East 3rd Street and all occupants were detained for questioning.

Investigators interviewed the victim and were able to view the surveillance video.

The victim reported that he was attempting to close the store and that four individuals from the sport utility vehicle entered the store and refused to leave when he told them the store was closed. One of the females involved reportedly opened a bag of potato chips and began eating them inside the store without paying for them. Another female involved then reportedly grabbed several bags of chips and ran from the store and got inside the sport utility vehicle with the stolen merchandise. The clerk advised officers that he chased the women out of the store and attempted to open the door to the vehicle to retrieve the stolen merchandise. As he was attempting to open the door, the vehicle drove out of the parking lot, leaving the two males involved behind. The clerk said that the males then began arguing with him in the parking lot and one of the males then kicked him in his back. The other male involved then produced a handgun and reportedly struck the victim in the head with the weapon. The involved males then began to run to the north, but the suspect with the handgun then turned toward the victim and fired one round at him from the gun before running north.

Officers searched the sport utility vehicle and located a loaded .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun with an extended magazine under a seat.

All four arrested individuals were transported to the Monroe County Jail and remanded to jail custody for the above-listed charges.

Anyone with further information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Kevin Frank at 812-339-4477.
