Ohio man arrested for child molestation

AUBURN – The Indiana State Police have completed a six-month-long investigation involving the alleged sexual molestation of an Auburn child.

The investigation culminated Thursday evening with the arrest of 49-year-old Steven George Gilbert, of Edgerton, Ohio man.

ISP detectives became involved in the matter back in March of this year, after being contacted by the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) reporting allegations of sexual misconduct involving a child.

During the course of this investigation, information was discovered alleging that Gilbert had been engaging in acts of sexual abuse with a then 11-year-old Auburn child. The child is now 14 years old.  The sexual abuse is alleged to have occurred on a routine basis for approximately two years during a timeframe from 2017 through 2019 until the child was approximately 13 years of age.

Upon review of the completed investigation, the DeKalb County Prosecutor filed for and was granted an arrest warrant Thursday by the DeKalb County Superior Court, ordering the arrest of Gilbert on a felony charge of child molesting

Through coordination and assistance with the Williams County (Ohio) Sheriff’s Office, deputies were able to locate Gilbert last evening at his Edgerton residence.  He was taken into custody without incident and booked into custody at the Williams County Jail, were he will remain held awaiting extradition back to Indiana.  Once back in Indiana, he will be held in the DeKalb County Jail with no bond, pending a hearing on the matter.

Assisting in this case was the Indiana DCS, the Dr. Bill Lewis Child Advocacy Center, and the DeKalb County Prosecutors Office.
