INDIANA – Wednesday, August 11 is 811 Day at the Indiana State Fair and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) reminds all Hoosiers to always Click or Call before they dig.
According to the popular home renovation platform Houzz, home renovation spending was up 15% in 2020 with much of the work focused on outdoor spaces.
“The Indiana State Fair attracted nearly one-million visitors from across the state in 2019,” said Darby Miller, IURC program manager. “Focusing a full day at the fair specifically on Indiana 811 puts potentially life-saving information about Indiana’s 811 Law into the hands of Hoosier homeowners and contractors.”
On 811 Day, Indiana 811 will showcase a booth with information about safe digging. During the duration of the fair, signage will also be displayed throughout the fair’s Midway and on all sanitizer stations reminding fairgoers to visit Indiana811.org or call 811 before starting any digging project. Indiana law (Ind. Code chapter 8-1-26), requires everyone who digs to contact Indiana 811 at least two full working days before starting an excavation project. This notice gives utility companies time to properly mark areas where utility lines are buried. Indiana’s 811 Law was established to minimize the risk of utility disruption, property damage, and even physical injury.
“Safe digging saves lives,” said Miller. “We want people to walk away from Indiana 811 Day at the Fair having had an amazing time at Indiana’s iconic celebration and with a little extra understanding about how critical it is to use 811 before digging.”
