Bedford woman flees from accident scene, arrest made

BEDFORD – A Bedford woman was arrested Saturday after Bedford Police officers were called to 16th Street and Becky Skillman Way after a report of an accident.

When police arrived the owner of the damaged vehicle told police the other driver had fled the scene and was traveling south on Plaza Drive towards McDonald’s. The driver was able to give the officers the license plate number of the fleeing vehicle.

The driver told police she was stopped at the stoplight at the intersection of 16th Street and Becky Skillman Way waiting for the light to turn green when her vehicle was struck in the rear by the fleeing vehicle. She then called 911 to report the accident.

There was no damage to the caller’s vehicle.

Brittany York

Officers located the fleeing vehicle and the driver 38-year-old Brittany York at McDonald’s. York was inside the restaurant. Police say she was struggling to get the lid onto a soft drink and appeared to be intoxicated.

Officers allowed York to get the food that she had just purchased and escorted her out of Mcdonald’s back to her car.

York denied being in an accident.

During the conversation with York, officers say she displayed many signs of being intoxicated.

York failed field sobriety tests. She refused to submit to a blood draw and refused to answer any additional questions.

A warrant was requested for a blood-draw and York was transported to IU Health Hospital to complete that test. York was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a previous conviction, OWI endangerment, OWI refusal, leaving the scene of an accident, and operating a vehicle while never licensed.
