Man in critical condition after officer-involved shooting in Columbus

COLUMBUS – A Columbus police officer shot an armed man outside of a home early this morning.

A man is in critical condition after being shot by a Columbus Police officer Sunday morning, according to Indiana State Police.

Columbus officers responded to a report of a suspicious person walking around a home in the 3300 block of Woodland Parkway just after 4 a.m.

ISP, who were asked to assist with the investigation, say the homeowner was on vacation and called 911 after seeing an unknown person on security footage.

The officer encountered the armed man outside of the home and shortly afterward the officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect. The officer fired his weapon an undetermined number of times and hit the male.

Officers provided medical aid to the injured male who was taken to Columbus Municipal Airport and then flown by IU Lifeline medical helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.

Police say a firearm was recovered at the scene.

The officer was uninjured and has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department protocol.
