Indiana Region of American Red Cross opens shelters, assesses storm damage across the region

INDIANA — The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross is providing disaster relief across the region due to severe weather that began Friday evening.

Red Cross staff and volunteers have been activated to open shelters in Bloomington and Madison and assess tornado damage in Jay County, Indiana, and Mercer County, Ohio to determine how the Red Cross can provide relief.

“Our communities are in need after last night’s storms, and our staff and volunteers are actively supporting those affected in their recovery efforts,” said Chad Priest, regional CEO for the American Red Cross – Indiana Region. “We will continue to monitor the severe weather situation across our region to determine if additional support is needed.”

The shelters that are currently open are:

  • Bloomington High School North at 3901 North Kinser Pike in Bloomington, IN 47404
  • North Madison Christian Church; 1400 E State Rd 62, Madison, Ind.

The Red Cross is coordinating closely with multiple community partners and emergency officials to provide aid. Red Cross support for sheltering efforts may vary in each community, depending on local plans. Notices will be provided if other shelters are open across the region.

People can download the Red Cross Emergency App for instant access to weather alerts for their area and where family and friends live. The free emergency app allows users to monitor for more than 35 different severe weather and emergency alerts in their town and other cities and provides a map with open Red Cross shelters.
