UPDATED – Lawrence County Inmate commits suicide

BEDFORD – On Thursday, sometime between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. during an hourly check on inmates at the Lawrence County Jail an inmate committed suicide by hanging.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham, correction officers began CPR and continued until an IU Health Ambulance crew arrived and took over life saving measures.

The inmate, 32-year-old Kyle Bailey, was unable to be revived. The coroner and detectives were called to the scene to investigate.

Bailey, of Bloomington, was arrested by Indiana State Police on June 1 on charges of dealing heroin, possession of heroin, and visiting a common nuisance. He was booked into the jail at 8:20 p.m. He was placed in observation for a minimum of 12 hours before being moved to the quarantine block.

Bailey was then moved to a locked cell and was alone at the time he committed suicide.

According to Sheriff Mike Branham, no other information will be released at this time. Further updates will be provided when the coroner’s report is complete.
