Ellie the dog rescued by Marion Township firefighters

MITCHELL – It was a different kind of rescue for Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday. Firefighters were called to rescue a dog who was chasing a rabbit that fell into a sinkhole.

At 12:10 p.m. firefighters were called to the 1100 block of Hollace Chastain Road to help rescue Ellie, a 12-year-old Lab/Pit mix

“Unfortunately Ellie found herself 20 feet down inside a sinkhole,” said Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Paul Gillespie.

Emergency crews used a rope system to repel down into the sinkhole. They were able to retrive Ellie and bring her to the surface.

Fire Chief Gillespie and Firefighter Caleb Lobosky were on the rope to make the grab.

Following the rescue Ellie was not interested in leaving the safety of the pickup truck according to firefighters.

Marion Township was on the scene for one hour and twenty minutes.
