Updated – Bloomington student dies after falling from a balcony

BLOOMINGTON – An Indiana University student died Friday after he fell from a fourth-floor balcony at the Urban Station Apartments.

According to Bloomington Police Capt. Ryan Redigo, officers were called to the scene at 5:42 p.m. in the 400 block of South Washington Street. There they found a 20-year-old Jacob Schleinz, of Champaign, Illinois, lying on the sidewalk with significant injuries.

Schleinz was transported to IU Health Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Two women who were with the man told police he had been on the balcony at their apartment. One of the women said she was talking with the man when he suddenly fell over the railing, Capt. Pedigo said.

The investigation continues. According to Capt. Pedigo, officers are reviewing nearby surveillance cameras to see if the footage can be found of the incident.

Schleinz touched the lives of so many people. Jacob was a Junior at Indiana University studying finance. He was in the Kelley School of business and a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He was a very involved member of Indiana University Dance Marathon (IUDM), Kids for CASA, and the Drop the Puck on Cancer hockey event.

Hockey was his passion, as it was a major part of his life for so many years. He played at the Chicago Fury AAA, the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals, and the Chicago Mission AAA.

His family and friends have set up a Gofundme account to fund for a memorial scholarship to honor Jacob. They have raised $93,110 to their $100,000 goal.
