One person injured after shed explodes in Mitchell

MITCHELL – One person was injured Sunday morning after a shed exploded at Lakeside Estates mobile home park in Mitchell.

Mitchell and Marion Township Volunteer Fire Departments respond to a explosion at Westside Estates Sunday morning.

The Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 63 Lakeside Estate Mobile Home park at 8:03 a.m. after a shed exploded and a report of a person injured in that blast.

According to residents, the explosion was loud and could be heard from several blocks from the mobile home park.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for several miles along State Road 37.

A Mitchell Police officer arrived on the scene to report the fire was about to spread into a nearby mobile home, and Mitchell Volunteer Fire requested the assistance of Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department.

The siding from the mobile home was melted following an explosion from a nearby shed.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading into the mobile home, however, the mobile home suffered heat damage from the fire.

IU Health Ambulance responded and treated one person who suffered burns to his body. He was transported to Bloomington Hospital for treatment.

According to Wayne Coble, Mitchell Volunteer Assistant Fire Chief, a propane heater was being used in the shed.

Firefighters continue to to investigate the cause of the fire, and no other information is availble at this time.

Mitchell VFD responded with two engines and Marion Township responded with two engines, along with IU Health Ambulance Service, Mitchell Police Department and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.
