Off-road vehicle accident claims life of Floyds Knobs Man

FLOYD CO. – Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a fatal off-road vehicle (ORV) accident that occurred in Floyd County Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Indiana Conservation officers and the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the 4400 block of Skyline Drive after a report of the accident with injuries.

When officers arrived they found 69-year-old Thomas Sonne, of Floyds Knobs, unresponsive in the roadway under an overturned ORV. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Floyd County Coroner’s Office.

Police say the ORV struck a guardrail, overturned and rejected Sonne from the vehicle.

Sonne was not wearing a helmet.  Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage riders to always wear a helmet and use necessary safety equipment when operating an ORV.

The accident is still under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officers.

Assisting agencies included the Lafayette Township Fire Department and New Chapel EMS.
