NLCS Achieves Savings With New Internet Contract

NLCS

(BEDFORD) – The North Lawrence Community Schools reduced internet costs by more than $40,000 with the new eRate/WAN contract.

This saving is attributed to fewer facilities needing internet services within the corporation due to consolidation. The original contract was more than $80,000.

In other business the board:

  • Approved and amended an agreement with Versatrans to add GPS to 20 school buses. This system allows school secretaries to keep track of buses. In addition, GPS will be added to special needs and extra-curricular buses. The total cost of this added service is $29,178.00
  • Approved a request to seek a waiver from the Indiana Department of Education to prevent adding school days to this year’s school calendar
  • Approved payroll and claims since the last school board meeting in the amount of $5,552,341.15

Dr. Mungle thanked the custodians and staff for their work over the last couple weeks in preparing the schools for snow removal.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association also thanked the corporation staff and Athletic Director Jeff Callahan for their hospitality and work during the Girls Regional Basketball Tournament.

Dr. Mungle wanted the school board to be aware of House Bill 1005 which establishes the Indiana education scholarship account program. The local teachers union, state superintendent association, and other public school organizations are opposed to this legislation. Dr. Mungle will be in talks with State Rep. Chris May and State Senator Eric Kock in opposing this legislation.

The school board will be updated on the new state budget in the near future as well as how it will affect the school corporation in the coming year.

Dr. Mungle also plans to present information on budget savings, following the consolidation. The school corporations spending equated to a deficit of $1 million prior to the schools’ consolidation.
