Stars post 1-2 record at Sullivan

SULLIVAN – Bedford North Lawrence posted a 1-2 record during the Sullivan Duals on Saturday.

James Covey

The Stars dropped a 54-27 decision to Gibson Southern, bounced back with a 28-27 victory over Forest Park, then suffered a 46-24 loss to Sullivan in the final round.

BNL avenged an earlier loss to the Rangers in the BNL Super 6 Duals.

“Everybody came out to fight that round,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “We picked up wins where we didn’t before. Even the losses we took, guys worked hard to stay off their backs and not give up team points. I was so proud of how everyone wrestled.”

BNL winners against the Rangers included Reece Hamblen (11-1 over Jacob Dooley at 145 pounds), Bruce Engleking (pin of Kaleb Pehrson in 1:47 at 152) and Conner Smith (pinning Austin Hoppenjans in 2:54 at 182).

James Covey went 3-0 overall and improved to 8-0 this season at 220. He pinned Gibson Southern’s Ben Luttrel in 1:25 and flattened Sullivan’s Luke Padgett in 0:22.

Other winners on the mat for the Stars against Gibson Southern included Brax Huber (pinning Lucas Emery at 126 in 0:23), Jorj Filler (trapping Baker Calver in 1:00 at 120), and Hamblen (topping Christian Polen 6-3).

Hamblen capped his 3-0 day with a pin of Sullivan’s Preston Anthony in 0:46. Other BNL winners against the Arrows included Byron Kyger (pinning Zander Bedwell in 3:22 at 160) and Smith (topping Skyler Boone in 0:31 at 170).

“Even though we left today 1-2 as a team, there was a marked improvement over the team we were at the Super 6 where, on paper, we had a better record,” Branam said. “I think there is a real cultural shift happening on the team. Teammates are pushing each other. We are going out there with more of an attack mindset and the boys are seeing the result of that intense mentality.”

BNL is scheduled to wrestle at Bloomington North on Thursday.
