Bloomington Woman Dies Following Knife Attack, Son Arrested

(BLOOMINGTON) – A Bloomington man is behind bars after he allegedly stabbed his mother to death and injured his father.

Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department arrested 29-year-old Matthew Warren.

Police say Warren stabbed his mother, Dawn Warren, to death. Warren also attacked his father, Louis Warren, at their home in the 4300 block of South Leonard Springs Road Saturday night.

Matthew Warren is facing charges of murder and battery.

Matthew, who suffers from schizophrenia, had been living with his parents since the fall of 2019 after he was released from a psychiatric hospital.

Louis Warren says he was watching television around 6 p.m. Saturday when he heard his wife scream. He went to see what was happening and found his wife on the dining room floor. She had been stabbed in the chest. Matthew was standing nearby with a knife in his hand.

Louis then grabbed a chair and held his son back while he attempted to talk him into dropping the knife.

Police say Louis was able to get the knife from Matthew and told him to go sit on the couch in the living room.

Sometime during the incident, Louis suffered a knife wound.

Louis then called 911 and started performing CPR on his wife until help arrived.

Dawn was transported by ambulance to the hospital but later died during surgery.

Officials are not sure why Matthew stabbed his parents but according to Louis there was no previous indication he may be violent.

Police note that Matthew refused to speak to officers about what happened.
