Bloomington Parks And Recreation Facilities’ Operation Status To Change In Response To County Health Department Order

(BLOOMINGTON) -The Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department today announced changes in the operation status of the Twin Lakes Recreation Center and the Frank Southern Ice Arena. These changes have been made to protect public health in the face of  rising levels of COVID-19 in the community and in compliance with the most recent Monroe County Public Health Order that limits all gatherings to 25 people.

The Frank Southern Ice Arena will close Thursday, November 19, and will remain closed until further notice in order to protect the community from the spread of COVID-19.

The Twin Lakes Recreation Center will remain open to current active members, who will have access to the third floor track and weight room, and cardio studio only. The hardwood courts and turf field are closed. The facility will be closed to all outside user groups until further notice. Group exercise classes will be held virtually.

TLRC members are required to wear a face mask while entering and exiting the facility, and while members are not engaged in vigorous physical activity. Physical distancing of at least six feet between people is also required.

The Allison-Jukebox Community Center, the Banneker Community Center, and the Switchyard Park Pavilion remain open to rental groups that are able to adhere to the Monroe County Health Department’s maximum gathering limit of 25 people.

“We have been managing the effects of  COVID-19 in every facet of our Parks and Recreation Department’s programs, events and facilities since early March,” said Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department Administrator Paula McDevitt. “We have made this difficult decision based on guidance from the Monroe County Health Department. The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to taking responsible actions that will help reduce the spread of the virus in our community.”

City parks and trails have remained open throughout the pandemic, with the City encouraging visitors using its outdoor facilities to follow guidelines intended to slow the spread of COVID-19: Maintaining a physical distance of at least six feet from other people, staying home if showing symptoms, and practicing good personal hygiene.
