Bloomington Man Facing Attempted Murder Charge

(BLOOMINGTON) – Bloomington Police arrested 25-year-old Matthew May on a charge of attempted murder.

May told police the shooting was an accident.

Monroe County Deputy Prosecutor Jeff Kehr says an initial hearing for May is set for today in Monroe Circuit Court.

According to Bloomington Police Department Capt. Ryan Pedigo, officers were called to IU Health Emergency Department at 4:15 a.m. Saturday after a report a 20-year-old male underwent emergency surgery after suffering a gunshot wound to the upper abdomen.

Officials say the shooting took place in a parking lot on South Walnut Springs Drive in the Walnut Springs apartment complex parking lot.

The victim and a 23-year-old female were sitting in a black BMW in the parking lot when police say May approached the vehicle and shot the victim.

Capt. Pedigo says it appears the victim was shot while sitting in the driver’s seat of the BMW and his girlfriend was in the passenger seat.

After shooting the victim, the woman told police that May told her to get out of the car so he could drive the victim to the hospital. May then moved the injured man to the passenger side, got in, and drove him to the IU Health Bloomington Hospital emergency room.

Officers located blood and a bullet fragment inside the BMW. Officers also located a 9mm shell casing in the parking lot near where witnesses claimed the BMW was parked when the victim was shot by May. Police are still searching for the weapon.

After surgery, the victim was transferred to IU Health Methodist Hospital where he is listed in serious condition.

The incident remains under investigation.
