According to a probable cause affidavit, Trooper Brown was on routine patrol at 6:20 p.m. when he received information that Trooper Sgt. Greg Day had made a traffic stop on Leesville Road and was requesting an additional officer to assist. Trooper Brown responded.

When Trooper Brown arrived he found a blue 1986 Ford Ranger pulled into a driveway, south of the old Leesville Store.

Trooper Day was parked behind the vehicle.

Trooper Day stopped the vehicle for speeding on Leesville Road. Day also discovered that the vehicle had a loud muffler and two of the occupants were not wearing a seat belt.

When Trooper Day approached the vehicle the driver John Newman was observed shoving something between his legs and his two passengers appeared nervous.

“There were two males in handcuffs,” Trooper Brown wrote. “One male was
identified as Codey French. A second male, identified as John Newman, was handcuffed and standing with Sgt. Day on the driver’s side of the truck. I saw a third male sitting in the passenger seat of the truck with his
hands over his head.”

Trooper Brown handcuffed the third male.

French told them he was wanted on an active warrant for failing to appear in Jackson County.

Newman told police he had shoved some dope and weed under the seat.

Police also found a glass meth pipe with white residue and burn marks sitting on the driver’s seat directly under Newman.

Sgt. Day conducted a search of French’s person and located a baggie that contained marijuana seeds. As Sgt. Day removed the baggie from French’s pants, French stated, “that’s the seeds from the marijuana I put under the seat.”

Troopers then learned Newman was driving on a suspended license. They also confirmed French was wanted on an active warrant out of Jackson County.

Troopers also found a bag of marijuana and a small plastic bag with a crystal substance that tested positive for meth that French had put under the seat. Troopers also located a .22-caliber rifle and two cordless tools in the truck.

French and Newman were arrested. The third male was released.
