Buying Fireworks Helps Fund Firefighter Training

(UNDATED) – Independence Day is just a few days away which means celebrations and fireworks. Did you know that purchasing fireworks in Indiana helps fund firefighter training and disaster relief throughout the state?

Before the fee was instituted, local taxpayers and the firefighters themselves paid for the equipment and classes they needed to protect Hoosiers. The money collected from this fee helps pay for instructors, specialized classes such as swift water rescue training and for equipment such as saws, hoses and simulators.

So what is taxed? Any items detonated or burned to produce a visible or audible effect are considered fireworks. These items may include:

  • Firecrackers
  • Roman candles
  • Missile-type rockets
  • Wire sparklers

The Fireworks Public Safety Fee is in addition to Indiana’s 7% state sales tax.
