Investigation Into Possible Drowning Underway At Lake James

(ANGOLA) – Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a possible drowning that occurred Thursday on Lake James in Steuben County. 

At approximately 1 p.m., Steuben County Communications received a 911 call of a swimmer who had gone under the water in the area of the Lake James sandbar.  A bystander entered the water and recovered the swimmer in approximately 10 feet of water. 

The swimmer was identified as 61-year-old Rocky R. Rutledge, of Romeoville, Illinois. He was transported to shore and pronounced dead at the scene. 

Conservation Officers were assisted on the scene by the Angola Fire Department, Fremont Fire Department, Steuben County sheriff’s Department, Parkview Samaritan, Steuben County EMS, Pokagon Park Staff, and the Indiana State Police.
