Single Vehicle Toll Road Crash Claims Life Of Angola Woman

(SHIPSHEWANA) – At approximately 8:05 a.m. Sunday morning, the Indiana State Police responded to a reported vehicle crash on the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90) near the 112-mile marker, in LaGrange County

Upon arrival, Troopers located a blue 2007 Toyota passenger vehicle rolled onto its passenger side in the median, with both the driver and passenger trapped and unresponsive inside.

Troopers Tim McCormick and Craig Woodcox were able to physically upright the vehicle onto its wheels and then free both occupants.

After extrication, the driver, 67-year-old Theresa Devos, of Angola, remained unresponsive and not breathing. Troopers immediately rendered CPR, however, all life-saving measures attempted were unsuccessful. Devos died at the scene as a result of her injuries suffered in the crash.

He daughter, 39-year-old Marie Devos, also of Angola, was a passenger in the vehicle. She was assisted by Toll Road maintenance workers until the arrival of EMS personnel. She was then transported by Middlebury EMS to the Elkhart General Hospital with reported non-life threatening injuries.

Master Trooper Tim McCormick’s preliminary investigation of the crash revealed Devos’s vehicle had been traveling westbound on the Toll Road. It was raining at the time of the crash, so the road conditions were wet. Devos’s vehicle hydroplaned on the wet road surface and veered off the road and struck a guardrail. This initial collision sent her vehicle into a spin, causing the vehicle to roll, and come to rest on the passenger side in the grass median.

The crash remains under investigation, and there is no further information available for release at this time.

Master Trooper McCormick was assisted at the scene by Troopers Craig Woodcox and Steve Spallinger, LaGrange Fire and EMS, Middlebury EMS, the LaGrange County Coroner, Toll Road Concessions Company, and Tom’s Towing Service.
