Obituary: James William “Jim” Hornocker

July 22, 1951 – April 30, 2020

James William “Jim” Hornocker, Jr., 68, of Mitchell, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2020, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born July 22, 1951, in Bedford, he was the son of James William and Deloris (Reichman) Hornocker, Sr.  He married Mary Lou Suddarth May 17, 2011.

Jim served six years as a Mitchell Police Officer and retired from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department with 35 years of service.  He held the rank of captain for 29 years.  He was a U. S. Army veteran, held the rank of Master Sergeant, and was a member of American Legion Post No. 250.  Jim was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM and La-Or-Ma Shrine Club.   He was a founding member of the Spring Mill Fraternal Order of Police and dedicated his life to law enforcement.  Jim was a member of Avoca Baptist Church and a graduate of Bedford High School in 1969.  Jim raised horses, was a horse farrier, and he spent lots of time with his friends at horse camps.  Jim was a fan of NASCAR and the Indianapolis Colts.  He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, Megan and Miranda, and his dog, Sluggo.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Hornocker of Mitchell; children, Cassie (Paul) Terry of Orleans, Dustin Roberts of North Carolina, Kyle Roberts of Mitchell; grandchildren, Miranda Terry of Bloomington, Megan Terry of Orleans, Emma Roberts of Mitchell, Dylan Roberts of New Palestine, Jaxon Roberts of Mitchell, Brennan (Leslie) Winkler of Mitchell, Abigail (Cody) Combs of Bedford; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Karen Hughes of Bedford, Sherry (Mick) Slessinger of Ellettsville; nephews, Travis (Jenny) Shofner of Bedford, Blayne Slessinger of Ellettsville; nieces, Jennifer (Mike) Bierbaum of Bedford, Bobbie Jo Pike of Scipio; several step nieces and  nephews whom he cared for dearly

His parents preceded him in death.

Private family service will be Monday, May 4,  at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.  Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Chaplain Jeff Nikirk will officiate.
