U.S. 50 Pavement Reconstruction Project Starts Monday In Seymour

(JACKSON CO.) – Milestone Contractors plans to begin work next week on a $15 million reconstruction project along U.S. 50 in Seymour.

The project will consist of full-depth pavement replacement between Agrico Lane and U.S. 31, a two-way left-turn lane, bridge widening over Sandy Creek, intersection improvements at U.S. 31 and a multi-use path, sponsored by the City of Seymour.

Crews will begin work on Monday (April 27) at the twin bridges over Sandy Creek. Both bridges will be widened to accommodate the center turn lane and pedestrian path. Traffic will be shifted to the far right lane and shoulder while work is in progress.

Construction will be completed in phases through fall of 2021. The contractor plans to maintain two travel lanes in each direction on U.S. 50 for the duration of the project.

Phase 1 (beginning early August): All U.S. 50 traffic will be moved to westbound lanes while eastbound lanes are rebuilt. Concrete pavement will be removed and replaced with full-depth asphalt. Interstate 65 ramps on the south side of U.S. 50 (ramps to/from U.S. 50 EB) will be closed. Traffic will use realigned ramps with temporary traffic signals to enter and exit I-65. Traffic will return to its normal configuration by the end of 2020.

Phase 2 (beginning Spring 2021): All U.S. 50 traffic will be moved to eastbound lanes while westbound lanes are rebuilt. Concrete pavement will be removed and replaced with full-depth asphalt. Interstate 65 ramps on the north side of U.S. 50 (ramps to/from U.S. 50 WB) will be closed. Traffic will use realigned ramps with temporary traffic signals to enter and exit I-65.

Phase 3 (beginning Summer 2021): All U.S. 50 traffic will be moved to eastbound lanes between Agrico Lane and Sandy Creek Drive/Frontage Road during construction in westbound lanes and will return to its respective lanes east of Sandy Creek to Stevens Drive. Between Stevens Drive and U.S. 31, traffic will shift to the right while median work is completed. Bridge widening will also take place on the north side of the Sandy Creek bridge for the addition of a sidewalk.

Phase 4/5 (beginning late Summer 2021): Concrete islands will be installed at the intersection of U.S. 50 and U.S. 31 to separate thru traffic from those making right-hand turns. Various lane closures will be in place at the intersection while work is completed.

Motorists should slow down, use extra caution and drive distraction-free through all work zones. The contract was awarded in February 2020 and is expected to be complete next fall.
