(WEST TERRE HAUTE) — A man found dead Saturday in rural western Indiana after exchanging gunfire with police has been identified as a 51-year-old resident of a nearby town, police said Monday.
Indiana State Police said the Vigo County Coroner identified the man as Errol K. Bolin of Seelyville, but released no additional information beyond saying that his relatives had been notified and the agency continues to investigate Saturday’s incident.
Vigo County sheriff’s deputies were called to the wooded, rural area of West Terre Haute about 7:30 a.m. Saturday to investigate a reported suspicious person. They found a vehicle with a shattered rear window and then came under fire when they used a loudspeaker to tell the suspect to leave the woods, police said.
Those deputies took cover and called for assistance. Responding officers from other police agencies were also fired on after they arrived, spotted someone in the woods and began yelling orders for that person to surrender, police said.
Bolin’s body was later found in the wooded area by the Terre Haute Special Response Team, which arrived at the scene a few miles east of the Illinois state line in an armored vehicle.
