Obituary: Mary G. Lane

March 12, 1919 – April 11, 2020

Mary G. Lane was born March 12, 1919, in Tateville, Kentucky to John and Emma Stigall.

Her first husband, Donald Gilbert preceded her in death in 1948. They had one son, George W. Gilbert (Sonjia) of Syracuse, Indiana. Mary married the love of her life, Loren D. Lane on July 28, 1949. They shared 64 years together and had three children, Linda Narvell (Vernie) of Salem, Nancy Dorsett (Paul), and John Lane (Mary) of Bedford. They also raised a niece Lisa Stigall Nolan (Mark).

A faithful member of Englewood Baptist Church for 67 years, Mary enjoyed teaching Sunday School and VBS. She was also a member of the Ladies Missionary Society, served on the dinner committee and sang in the choir.

Mary worked at Central Foundry and sold Avon for several years.

She was always proud of her garden and liked to can, freeze and share her produce with others.

Mary’s 100th birthday party in 2019 was very special and fun. She enjoyed seeing the more than 120 people who visit her.

Her daughter-in-law, Mary was a great help taking her for hair cuts and doctor visits. She would come for supper on Sunday evenings, work puzzles and listen to Grace Full Gospel Church services.

Mary’s cousin, Darlene Cobb and a friend Mrs. Deckard would make visits to area nursing homes, eating out and they all enjoyed the Friday night get-togethers with friends, food and good old Christian singing.

Wanda Vaught helped Mary with her household chores and became a very good friend.

Mary loved her family, she had eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Loren; a son, John and four brothers, Sam Stigall, Webster Stigall, Fount Stigall (Mildred) and James Stigall; one sister, Dolly House, and three infant siblings that passed at birth.

A private family service will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Burial will be at Beech Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mary’s memory to Englewood Baptist Church.
