Obituary: James Melvin Sons

June 27, 1937 – April 7, 2020

James Melvin Sons, a resident of Fort Wayne, IN since 2002, left this world on April 7, 2020.

Born in Bedford, IN on June 27, 1937, he married the love of his life, Sondra Kay (Lewis) Sons in 1955. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this October.

James was honorably discharged from the Indiana National Guard and as a Reserve of the United States Army in 1958. He retired from Brunner Engineering & Manufacturing/Manchester Tank & Equipment Co. as a welder in 1997.

James was an outstanding husband, encouraging father, and proud grandfather. He never met a stranger, had an infectious smile, loved purple martins, watching his grandson play soccer, a well-manicured lawn, helping others, and was everyone’s favorite neighbor.

He was preceded in death by his father Virgil “Buck” and mother Ruby Sons, two brothers, and six sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Sondra, daughter Jami (Robert Todd) Beard, and grandson Reid Beard of Fort Wayne, IN. Sisters-in-law Carol Scherschel and Patti Lewis, many nieces and nephews and his rescue dog Rambo. We want to thank many friends and family that supported us.

Due to the COVID-19 virus, there will a private family graveside service Friday afternoon at Cresthaven Memory Gardens in Bedford with Pastor Phil Thorne Officiating.  Arrangements are by Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes in Bedford.

Online condolences and remembrances may be sent to the family at www.fergusonlee.com
