Several Fire Departments Battle Fire at Former Green Banner Newspaper Building in Pekin

(PEKIN) – Several fire departments in Washington County battled a fire at 490 East State Road 60, in Pekin.

The building used to house the Green Banner newspaper that has since closed and is now an office building.

Firefighters from Pierce -Polk, Franklin Township., Jackson Township, Salem Fire Department and Borden Fire Department in Clark County were dispatched to the scene.

Several fire departments in Washington and Clark counties battled a structure fire at 490 East State Road 60 in Pekin Saturday night.

The Green Banner, which spanned three generations, ceased operations in May of 2018.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department was also called to the scene to assist. The call came in around 10:51 p.m. Saturday night.

The fire department remained on the scene several hours to make sure the fire was completely out.

State Road 60 in Pekin at the Sunoco Station had to be closed down while firefighters worked the fire scene. Water supply lines were stretched down State Road 60 to fire hydrants.

A strong thunderstorm went through the area with heavy lightning.

Pierce -Polk firefighters remained on the scene until 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
