Bedford Mayor Sam Craig Issues Changes to City Operations

(BEDFORD) – Due to Governor Eric Holcomb’s Indiana Stay-At-Home Order issued to be effective today at 11:59 p.m. and to end April 6th at 11:59 p.m., Bedford Mayor Sam Craig has issued the following changes to City of Bedford operations.

“We urge the public to do business with us by phone, voicemail, email, or online,” Mayor Craig said. “We ask for your cooperation during this time of unprecedented concern for public safety and to shelter in place as directed for the well-being of our community. “

City Hall – Will take phone calls from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.Monday through Friday at 812-279-6555. Emails can be directed to DAndry@bedford.in.us. The front door entrance will remain locked. 

Planning Office – Located in City Hall will take phone calls at 812-275-1631 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. or email at BWoodward@bedford.in.us . The front door entrance will remain locked. 

Clerk-Treasurer Office – Located in City Hall will take phone calls at 812-275 1606 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. or email at MPfeiffer@bedford.in.us. The front door entrance will remain locked. 

Director of Administrative Services – Located in City Hall will take phone calls at 812-275-1635 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 pm. or email DHenderson@bedford.in.us. The front door entrance will remain locked. City employees are encouraged to contact Denise by phone or email only. 

Transportation Department TASC – The TASC buses will be running daily from Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on an “ESSENTIAL TRAVEL” only basis. This will include travel to and from essential employment, medical appointments, and one trip per week to a grocery store. Dispatch number is 812-275-1633. You will be screened on the phone so the office can best plan for the trip. 

Street Department – Will be open daily for phone calls at 812-279-9222 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. or email SHenderson@bedford.in.us .Voicemails can be left 24/7.

Sanitation Department – Will be open daily for phone calls at 812-279-9222 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. or email SHenderson@bedford.in.us. Voicemails can be left 24/7. Automated trash, rear loader, and special assistance routes will be picked up as scheduled during this time. Please have your toter and recyclables out the night before as times could vary from normal. Trash should be bagged inside the toter for pickup. Household, Compost, and Recycling will be picked up as scheduled during this time. Brush will NOT be picked up during this time. 

Utilities – Will be open daily for phone calls at 812-275-1626 Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m until 4:15 p.m. or email at bedfordutilities@comcast.net. The front door entrance will remain locked. The drive-thru window will remain open for emergency requests during operating hours but we encourage online, mail, and text payments if at all possible.

Our Drinking Water is Safe – The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water. Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as our municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19 per CDC Water Transmission and COVID-19. 

Sanitary Sewer – Workers who handle human waste or sewage will follow the CDC guidelines of basic hygiene and personal protective equipment to reduce the risk for our employees. 

Police Department – Our police force is staffed 24/7 for emergencies. The department entrance is open to the public if needed. We ask that if you have symptoms such as a cough, shortness of breath, or fever you use other means to contact us such as phone, email or voicemail. We ask that you use hand sanitizer provided after entering the building. Non-emergency calls can be made at 812-275-3311. In case of an emergency call 911. 

Fire Department – Our fire department is staffed 24/7 for emergencies. The fire department entrances are locked. Non-emergency calls can be made at 812 275-4544. Visitors with urgent needs can knock and will be screened by personnel if available. If there is no answer call 911 or go to the Police Department. 

Parks and Recreation Department – Beginning Wednesday, March 25th the office and support facilities will be closed. Questions can be directed to the following numbers: 

Park Office: 812-.583-0131; Park Maintenance: 812-583- 1460; Otis Park: 812-583-2052 

  • All programs and classes through April 6 are canceled. 
  • All shelter rentals are canceled through April 6. 
  • No new rentals will be booked prior to April 7, 2020. 

The Easter Eggstravaganza, originally scheduled for April 11th, has been postponed.

Bedford Softball Association Umpire Clinic April 18th has been postponed until further notice.

The Par 3 Challenge at Otis Park Golf Course on April 18th has been canceled.

The BSA Registration deadline will be extended – Accordingly, league play will be pushed back to reflect this shift, and information will be published as determined.  Registration remains open and can be made by mail to BSA 1625 Q Street Bedford, IN 47421. 

COVID-14: SOCIAL DISTANCING IN PUBLIC PARKS AND TRAILS 

Do not use parks or share the trail and warn trails if you are exhibiting symptoms. Warn other trail users of your presence and as you pass.

Be prepared for limited access to public restrooms or water fountains 

Observe CDC’s minimum recommended social distancing of following CDC’s guidance on 6 feet from other persons at all times and personal hygiene prior to visiting parks or trails.
