UPDATED – Man Fatally Shot after Entering Columbus Home Armed with Baseball Bat

(COLUMBUS) – A man was fatally shot after entering a Columbus home and threatening the homeowner with a baseball bat.

Columbus Police officers responded to a home in the 2000 block of Home Avenue around 1 a.m. Saturday after reports of shots fired.

They arrived to find a man with multiple gunshot wounds inside the home. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office identified the man shot and killed as 38-year-old Derek Henderson, of Columbus. After an autopsy, the preliminary cause of death was found to be gunshots to the head, chest, and abdomen.

The homeowner told police he was confronted inside his own home by an unknown person with a baseball bat and discharged his firearm a short time later, striking the man.

The Bartholomew County Death Investigation Team is handling the case.
