Man Crashes Vehicle, Dies While in Handcuffs

(DALEVILLE) – A man died shortly after he was handcuffed and in police custody on Monday.

State police say a black 2019 Hyundai was traveling south on the southbound ramp to I-69 from State Road 67 when it went off the road, crashed through the retaining fence of the interstate, and into a field before hitting a tree.

When Daleville police and firefighters arrived just before 4 p.m. on Monday they say they found 24-year-old Dion L. Crittle, of St. Louis, Missouri, was seen walking away from the crash and refusing to stop.

Investigators say an officer and firefighter were able to subdue Crittle and put him in handcuffs until they could determine what happened.

They later realized that Crittle became unresponsive on the ground.

Officials rushed him to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, but he did not survive. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

An autopsy found no injuries from the crash or from his arrest. The coroner is waiting on toxicology reports.

The Daleville Police Department has asked the Indiana State Police to conduct an investigation into the incident.
