NLCS Board to Meet Tonight to Address Visionary Committee Recommendation

(BEDFORD) – The North Lawrence Community School Board will hear recommendations from the Visionary Committee presented by Superintendent Ty Mungle to consolidate the elementary and middle schools during a meeting at the administration building.

The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.

At a meeting on Nov. 21., the visionary committee recommended the board consider Plan 3, which would consolidate the district’s nine elementary schools into four K-6 schools — Dollens, Lincoln, Parkview, and Shawswick, and would create one middle school (Bedford Middle School) for students 7-8 grade.

Superintendent Ty Mungle said, the Visionary Committee’s purpose was “to best prepare our students; we must support our dedicated employees in maintaining an effective student to teacher ratio. We will increase support for right-sizing our school corporation in an expedited manner. This will address that five out of ten elementary schools operate in deficit spending while acknowledging the size of the school district and population trends, and state funding formula. Our vision is to support a community that is sustainable, healthy and viable.”

During the November school board meeting Mungle told the board, the school corporation will be operating on a $1.1 to $1.3 million deficit this year.

Mungle believes the consolidation can better provide more resources to students.
