(HANOVER) – Floyd Central claimed two Hoosier Hills Conference titles during the league cross country races on Saturday afternoon at Hanover College.

Bedford North Lawrence finished fifth in the boys meet with 137 points. The 14th-ranked Highlanders totaled 35 points and edged No.23 Jennings County on the sixth-runner tiebreaker.

In the girls race, No.8 Floyd Central crushed the competition, posting a perfect team score of 15 while sweeping the top five spots. BNL was seventh with 189.

BNL’s Cooper Holmes earned Honorable Mention status for all-HHC honors while finishing 12th in 16:49. Ethan Vaughn was 27th in 17:35, and Colton Sons was 30th in 17:56 to lead the Stars.

“Cooper received honorable mention, which last year he missed by one spot,” BNL coach Jon Calhoun said. “His hard work is paying off, which will hopefully show during sectional and regional time.

“Overall I’m happy with how our team competed. We knew it would be tough to replicate our fourth-place finish last year, which was our goal again.”

At the front of the pack, Jennings County’s Carter Leak was the individual champion in 16:15, clipping FC’s Luke Heinemann by four seconds. Floyd won the tiebreaker by 20 seconds (the gap between the team’s sixth finishers).

BNL will now turn its attention to the sectional on its home course next week.

“Now the team has to quickly move to real postseason time,” Calhoun said. “It is going to be a dogfight to earn that spot, but I will remind our team that our training and goal is to redeem ourselves. We have to earn it with every meter.”

In the girls race, the Highlanders were dominant as Sydney Liddle breezed to the individual crown in 18:33, while Savanna Liddle was a distant second in 19:20.

Grace Tanksley was the leader for the Stars, finishing 17th in 21:18. Lynnae Greene was 41st in 24:00, and Myra Roberts was 48th in 24:37.

BNL will host the IHSAA sectional races on Oct. 12.
