(OOLITIC) – The Oolitic Fire Department held the first Oolitic Limestone Festival on Saturday.
It was a beautiful day for festival-goers to enjoy a variety of events throughout the day.
The morning started off with town-wide yard sales, a cruise-in on Main Street and numerous food and services vendors. The parade was at 1 p.m.
From 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. the American Patriots Lodge held a hog roast.
Smokin Jim’s Barbecue from Bedford and 2 Chubs And A Rub from Anderson competed in a BBQ cook-off.Â
Judges for this year’s BBQ competition were Oolitic Baptist Church Pastor Taylor Quinley, Josh Davis of AMR Ambulance Service and Bill Raines of 1340 AM WBIW.
The competitors were judged in four categories: Chicken, Pork, Ribs, and Brisket.
The winners in chicken and ribs was 2 Chubs and A Rub. The winner in Pork and Brisket was Smokin Jim’s Barbecue.
Next year the Oolitic Fire Dept. Chief Ted Maze hopes to be able to bring in more BBQ competitors.
“I love these small community festivals. It brings your community together. Today is a perfect day for it. My son had to work today, but I love coming to Oolitic,” said Jeff Bowden.
Throughout the afternoon adults could enjoy the Taste of Oolitic by Carousel Winery at the Oolitic Fire Department, Petty Thieves played from 3:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. and there was a free corn hole tournament all day at the firehouse.
Officials say this will be an annual event on the Second Saturday of September. Go ahead and mark your calendars and plan on attending next year’s event.
