Crash Claims Woman’s Life

(COLUMBUS) – A Saturday afternoon crash on Interstate 65 near Columbus claimed the life of a woman.

The female victim was in a vehicle registered to Kayze Gilstrap of Bedford. Deputy Coroner Jay Frederick confirmed this morning that it would take a few days to confirm the female’s identity, but the registered owner of the car is Gilstrap.

According to Columbus Police, the driver of Gilstrap’s car was backing up into the left lane of I-65 just south of Columbus at 4:45 p.m. The driver was attempting to try and reach a crossover between the north and southbound lanes that they had passed by.

An SUV struck the rear of the car and the car burst into flames.

The driver of the SUV, 31-year-old Vanessa Rosborough, of Indianapolis, was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Rosborough’s passenger, 28-year-old Emily McNiff, of Fishers, was flown to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

The driver of Gilstrap’s car was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Columbus police accident reconstructionists.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 65 were closed from Walesboro to Columbus for almost four hours.
