Hazardous Material Spill Drill at Monroe County Fairgrounds Tuesday

(BLOOMINGTON) – The Monroe County Fairgrounds will be bustling with activity Tuesday morning with agencies with the Local Emergency Planning Council participating in an annual large-scale hazardous material spill drill.

Participants will begin arriving at 5700 West Airport Rd. around 8:30 a.m. The drill is set to begin around 9 a.m. and end around 1 p.m.

Agencies participating include Monroe County township and city fire departments; IU Health Bloomington, Monroe and Meadows hospitals; county and city public works departments; City of Bloomington Utilities; Bloomington Street Department; American Red Cross; Monroe County Health Department; Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and the Ellettsville Police Department, and others.

The event is a requirement of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security for counties to receive funding.

Officials chose a chemical stored at a local company for Tuesday’s chemical spill.

The name of that chemical is not being released. Those participating in the drill need to identify the compound properly. Once identified, they will determine if an evacuation is needed, how to respond, and then will then handle the spill.
