Motorcyclist Injured After Hitting Dog

(BEDFORD) – A Bedford man was injured after his motorcycle struck a dog on Pleasant Run Road near Dunn Bridge Road at 4:46 p.m. Monday.

According to a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department report, 53-year-old Wesley Higgins, of Bedford, was traveling west on Pleasant Run Road and had just crested a small hill to find a small white dog in the roadway.

Higgins attempted to avoid hitting the dog but was unable to. After hitting the dog, the 1996 Harley Davidson motorcycle went down and threw Higgins from the vehicle.

Police say he rolled several times and came to a stop in a grassy area on the south side of the roadway. Higgins suffered numerous injuries including road rash to both arms and legs, a laceration across his nose and a possible dislocated shoulder and scraps and cuts to both hands.

He was wearing a helmet preventing a head injury. Police say the helmet had several scratches on both sides.

Higgins was transported by an AMR ambulance to IU Health Bedford Hospital for treatment.

The dog, owned by Timothy Connolly, died at the scene. Connolly was at the scene and retrieved the dog.

The motorcycle had damage on both sides.
