Court Rules School Not Responsible for Teen’s Death

(INDIANAPOLIS) — Indiana’s high court says a school district isn’t legally responsible for the death of a 16-year-old boy fatally shot after leaving school in the middle of the day.

Jaylan Murray died in February 2016 at an apartment complex near Arlington Community High School.

Murray’s mother and his son’s mother sued Indianapolis Public Schools, alleging the school didn’t properly supervise him.

The district argued in part that it can’t stop a student from leaving through a school exit.

The Indianapolis Star reports the case was transferred to the Indiana Supreme Court after a Marion County trial court ruled in the district’s favor.

The justices affirmed the trial court’s decision on Thursday, finding that it’s clear Murray left school to do something unlawful and potentially dangerous, actions that contributed to his death.
