Public Has Until June 17 To Submit Comments To IDEM On Possible Lehigh Expansion

(MITCHELL) – The public has until June 17 to submit comments to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management on Lehigh Cement Co. LLC plan to expand.

But to expand the company needs approval from IDEM to secure the necessary environmental permits to make the project happen. If the company secures the air quality permits, construction could begin next year.
Officials say the new facility will be constructed just north of the current plant. The company plans to add 52 new full-time jobs, growing its current workforce to around 120 associates. The fabrication of the plant is expected to bring in as many as 1,000 workers to the area during the construction phase.
According to IDEM, to gain approval the public must be given a chance to comment on whether or not the cement manufacturer should be allowed to alter its air permit to allow for a new super kiln to replace its current three.
The public has until June 17 to file notice with IDEM of support or objection to the expansion project.
Lehigh has filed both a “significant source modification” and a “significant permit modification” with IDEM in relation to the new facility. Copies of the application and IDEM’s preliminary findings are available for review at the Mitchell Community Public Library or online at www.in.gov/idem.
