Donor Gives Earlham College $1M Gift In Name Of Late Professor

(RICHMOND) – An eastern Indiana liberal arts college has received an anonymous $1 million gift in the memory of a late professor of history and Jewish studies.

Earlham College says the gift was made in the name of Robert F. Southard, who taught from 1971 until his death in 2007, covering topics ranging from Medieval Jewish history to 20th Century Europe.
Interim President Avis Stewart says school officials “are deeply thankful for the generosity” of the donor’s gift to the school, which is located in Richmond, about 65 miles east of Indianapolis.
The gift from a donor-advised fund is designated for the college’s annual fund.
Southard’s wife, Edna C. Southard, and sons, David and Jared, said in a statement that he would have been “honored and humbled” by the gift.
