Vaughn David Delong – Springville
February 24, 1948 – August 12, 2017
Vaughn David Delong, 69, passed peacefully from ALS in his home in Springville, Indiana on August 12,
2017.
Born February 24, 1948, in Indianapolis to James A. Delong and E. Marie (Walters) Delong, he graduated from North Central High School. He had an early love of cars and tractors and bought his first car at age 14 with money saved from his paper route and mowing lawns. Vaughn served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1968-1969 and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service. Vaughn was a farmer and drove a school bus for Eastern Greene Schools for 42 years. He was always active in the Baptist church and was part of Crooked Creek Baptist Church, Owensburg Baptist Church and most recently Avoca Baptist Church. From 1985-2001, he served in various capacities at the Indian Creek Baptist Camp. A lover of music, he enjoyed singing and playing hymns on the organ and accordion. He also sang tenor
in the BASIC Quartet for many years.
Vaughn is survived by his wife Kelsie; three children Nicholas, Nathan (Caitlin), and Julia Delong; three step-children April Turpin, Coy (Kimberly) Hurley, and Kathryn (Jordan) Lewis; grandchildren Jacob Hurley and Enon and Roman Lewis; niece, Tessa (DeLong) Abney; nephew, Damian DeLong; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James K. DeLong.
Visitation will be held at Day & Carter Mortuary, 1133 Lincoln Ave, Bedford, Indiana 47421, Tuesday August 15, 2017 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Visitation will resume Wednesday August 16, 2017, from 12:30-2 p.m. at Avoca Baptist Church, 21 Center St, Avoca, IN 47420, with services following at 2 p.m. Burial will be conducted at Owensburg Cemetary in Owensburg, Indiana.
